Last Thursday (4 March 2010), the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006 which authorises the construction of the Borders Railway was implemented by Transport Minister, Stewart Stevenson, cutting the first sod (the glamour of transport eh!).
The Act states that once work has begun the whole of the railway must be constructed from Edinburgh to Tweedbank (a similar distance from Edinburgh to Glasgow) therefore there’s no going back now! The OJEU has been issued for the construction contract with expressions of interest due any time now.
This has been made possible in no small part by the completion of the land assembly for the project, all 1500 separate plots of land including houses, roads, riverbeds and approximately 200 bridges?!! Congratulations to all of those in the project team (especially Odell Milne, Robin Priestley and the rest of our property colleagues) who have worked so hard to keep the railway on track!! (I promise no more puns in my next blog…)
