UK wind power hits record generation output

According to the National Grid, on Monday wind power in the UK was generating the same amount of electricity as 4 nuclear power stations (here). That was one of the many useful nuggets of information provided to local authority delegates attending the Renewables UK regional planning seminar at Dalmahoy.

Matching that exciting news with my talk on planning policy was always going to be a challenge, but I impressed myself with the suggestion that Phil and Kirstie could do a wind farm site “Location, Location, Location” – to illustrate my central theme that it’s all about location.

A delegate posed the intriguing question of how practices evolved from developing wind sites in the countryside could be applied to urban developments – in his case, Forth Energy’s proposal to erect wind turbines in Dundee and how to approach community benefit payments. That was a useful reminder of how the renewables industry is always moving on.

The seminar included a visit to the Pates Hill wind farm, which started operation in February 2010. It’s always a good feeling to see something you were involved in making happen (Brodies gave the developer legal advice). A rain shower was a temporary dampener, but the day was rounded off by a lively panel discussion.
